Have we seen your cat lately?
Many people are under the mistaken belief that cats, unlike dogs do not need vaccines or yearly wellness visits. As veterinary professionals we often hear "My cat is healthy, I only take him to the vet when he is sick" or "It was just a FREE cat, I do not want to put a lot of money into her so I am not going to vaccinate her". While it is true that cats can be more self sufficient than dogs, that doesn't mean that they do not need regular wellness checks and routine vaccinations. Many people do not realize that some of the diseases for which we vaccinate can be brought to your cat on your clothing or can be transferred through an open window. Our Feline Friends are very good at masking their discomfort and illnesses.
So it is not unusual for the first time we see someone's cat ~ the pet looks like this:
Often, by the time that owners notice unusual symptoms like hiding, vocalizing, or other anti-social behaviors, a small problem has grown into a much larger one. The purpose of a yearly Wellness Visit is to identify potential health problems before they reach advanced stages. Many times early diagnosis can lead to more manageable outcomes, which in turn leads to less stress on your pet and even better ~ your wallet.
